The CDC and Water Filters

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention focuses on the health and safety of the public. H2O is one of the most important resources the association concentrates on because people are exposed to it everyday. Water has the ability to be helpful to the health of individuals by providing hydration but if the H2O contains particles or diseases, it can be very dangerous to the immune system. The CDC holds high standards for the water the public is exposed to and supports the use of water filters to assure the removal of many particles and contaminants. The Division of Parasitic Diseases looks out for the health of the public's H2O and has offered insight into which filters are good for the home's water.

The CDC states that one of the most hazardous parasites that can be carried in H2O is cryptosporidium. These parasites can cause a disease called cryptosporidiosis which causes uncomfortable symptoms such as diarrhea and can live in the body for long periods of time. While most water is safe from particles of cryptosporidium, water filters can still be used in the home to assure the removal of even the smallest particles in the H2O. Water filters that use reverse osmosis are the most effective at the removal of parasites. These filters use a membrane to filter the water through and even the smallest of particles, parasites or bacteria are removed from the water before it flows through. There are many other types of water filters that work by microstraining and are proven to be just as efficient at the removal of parasites. Water filters that use a filter with a pore size of one micron or less are the most effective at removing small parasites and particles such as cryptosporidium.

Water filters that contain one micron sized filters are able to remove microbes that are one micron or greater in size, including most of the parasites and bacteria that may still be present in the H2O. There are two types of water filters that are able to remove particles that are one micron or larger in size. These water filters are called either “absolute one” filters or “nominal one” filters. Absolute one filters may be more effective at removing particular parasites such as cryptosporidium. Nominal one water filters may still allow about 20% to 30% of microbes that are one micron in size.

NSF testing is available for most water filters to determine if the units are effective in the removal of cryptosporidium. The NSF trademark on the boxes of filters is the best indicator that the unit is efficient at removing the parasites. The words “cyst removal” or “cyst reduction” also refers to the water filter's ability to remove the parasites from the water. However, since NSF testing is expensive, some companies may not put their products through the NSF certification. There are some water filters on the market that are extremely efficient at the removal of parasites but may not have the NSF trademark on the box. Filters that use reverse osmosis or contain a filter with an absolute pore size of one micron or smaller are generally effective at removing parasites and more than likely would pass the NSF testing for cyst reduction.

Some of the water filters that may not be classified for the removal of cryptosporidium include carbon filters, chlorine removers and water softeners. In order for filters that do remove parasites to work properly, the consumer should keep the filter maintained and clean. By not replacing materials when needed, the consumer runs the risk of water filters failing to remove parasites from the water. A clean and efficient filter is able to more effectively remove parasites, particles and bacteria from the H2O.

Thanks to the help of the CDC, many people know now what to look out for in their home water. While there are high standards set for the cleanliness of tap H2O, filters can help to make the water even safer and better tasting. There are many types of water filters but the problem of parasites such as cryptosporidium can be addressed with reverse osmosis and absolute one micron water filters. Every type of water filter has different bacteria or contaminants it specializes in removing and the consumer should know which toxins are important for removal of their home tap H2O. The CDC and Division of Parasitic Diseases encourage the use of water filters to remove different types of contaminants and parasites. Through water filters, many people have found better tasting and safer home H2O.
