The EPA and Water Filters

The Environmental Protection Agency is focused on the health and safety of the H2O people have exposure to. The use of water filters in the home can be effective in removing many types of contaminants and particles in the water. The EPA sets strict standards on the health of H2O used by residents and in order to keep this water safe, the filters may need to be used in the home. There are a number of contaminants and toxins in H2O that can be consumed without any effects but if these contaminants reach high levels, they can become dangerous to the health of individuals.

The EPA has drawn attention to the health and safety of those with weakened immune systems and how infected H2O can be detrimental to their health. Although the EPA does enforce strict standards on the water that the public is exposed to, those who deal with a weak immune system may want to consider water filters to remove even more of the toxins that are usually safe for other people to consume. Small traces of contaminants are expected to be present in water but those residents who suffer from health conditions or a weakened immune system may find these small traces hazardous to their health. In these situations, filters are recommended to remove even the smallest contaminants and particles from the home's H2O.

One of the most dangerous contaminants for those with weakened immune systems is a microbial particle called cryptosporidium. These microscopic contaminants can cause illness in many people and severe illness in those who suffer from a weakened immune system. Water filters are able to remove even the smallest cryptosporidium particles in water. With the use of filters, only the most clean and safe H2O is released for those with weaker immune systems. The most effective water filters at removing this type of contaminant include those filters that use reverse osmosis. This process is measured to be one of the most efficient filtration systems on the market today. Many of these filters are able to remove contaminants and particles that are less than one micrometer in size and larger.

Before purchasing water filters for the home, the EPA suggests doing the proper research to be sure the unit is the right one for your home. Maintenance of the filters, product performance, certifications and local H2O quality are all factors that should be considered before purchasing water filters for the home. One of the most important things a consumer should research is the quality of his or her own tap water. An annual H2O quality report can easily be reported for the resident and will be able to list the amounts and types of contaminants present in the home water. Some contamination levels can change from season to season and it is important for the consumer to verify that these contaminant levels stay under the EPA standards. Water filters are able to help keep these higher contamination levels at a lower rate. Once consumers know the types of higher contaminations to look out for in their own tap H2O, choosing the correct water filters for the home can be easier.

One common contaminant that can easily become present in water is lead. Lead can infect H2O from the lead pipes used to carry the water into the home. With the help of water filters, this excess lead can be removed from the H2O before the residents are exposed to it. Water from household wells can also be in danger of containing nitrates and chloroform bacteria. This H2Oshould be tested annually to see if there is a spike in either one of these contaminants. Those who use well water should also look at water filters that specialize in the removal of certain bacteria and contaminants which are common in well water.

Water filters are a great addition to home treatment systems because they are able to improve the taste of H2O. By removing any lead particles or the unwanted taste of chlorine from the home water, filters can make the indoor H2O refreshing, clean and healthier to use and consume. Microbes that can affect the taste and health of water are also easily removed by water filters. Since different filters specialize in removing different contaminants and particles, it is important for the consumer to know what types of contaminants need to be removed from their home water before purchasing a unit. There are also specific types of water filters that use multiple filtration technologies to remove a number of contaminants from the H2O.

There are many types of water filters for consumers to choose from. There are many pour-through containers and those filters which attach underneath the sink or to the faucet. Both types of water filters generally use the same types of technology to remove contaminants from the H2O. The water can be run through fabrics or materials in order to filter out the particles from the H2O or it can flow through a ceramic screen to remove the contaminants. Most of these filters use a molded block of activated carbon. Activated carbon is a material proven to improve the taste of water and remove the common contaminants such as lead and protozoan cysts. The EPA recommends for the consumer to look for water filters that use materials labeled as absolute one micron filters. These filters are proven to be the most effective at the removal of particles including cryptosporidium. When considering water filters sizes, the size of the contaminants trying to be removed should be known and compared to the size of the holes of the filter.

Distillers and reverse osmosis are types of water filters that have also become popular with the public. The distillation process heats water to a boiling point and collects the water vapors that are released through the process. While many contaminants are removed from the water through this process, the natural minerals and vitamins are also removed from the water. Reverse osmosis is a process used by many water filters in which H2O is forced through a semi-permeable membrane. This membrane filters out many toxins that may have been present in the water. Although reverse osmosis water filters may use about three times as much H2O as they treat, the water that is treated is sure to be free of any unhealthy disease-causing organisms and contaminants.

Water softeners are types of water filters that are able to soften the hardness of H2O. The hardness ions that are present in the water are replaced with softer sodium or potassium ions. Softeners are types of filters that can also remove radium and barium particles from the water. H2O hardness can be caused by an excess of calcium or magnesium in the H2O and water softeners specialize in the replacement of these types of contaminants.

Certification is another important factor that comes into play when choosing water filters for the home. Certification of filters can come from three different organizations and the consumer should be sure the unit he or she chooses has certification from at least one of these organizations. NSF International in one organization that can certify filters. This organization only gives certification to top products that are proven to improve the quality of home H2O. Underwriters Laboratories is an accredited testing facility that is able to give certification to those water filters which meet the quality standards desired. The Water Quality Association is another organization that tests filters and gives certification only to those that meet or exceed standards of performance and removal of contamination.

The EPA's registration seal may also be seen on the boxes of some water filters. This means that the product is one that contains a germ-killing agent that is able to remove hazardous germs from the H2O. The filters with the EPA registration number more than likely use a bacteriostatic agent such as silver to stop microbes from growing in the filter. This agent is found to be perfectly healthy for the H2O and these water filters are able to remove bacteria and germs from the water.

The standards that the EPA sets for home H2O help to keep the public safe and healthy. However, the use of water filters can help keep home water even fresher and cleaner for consumption. Ffilters make the already healthy water better tasting and free of particles and contaminants. There are many types of water filters that use different technologies. Consumers have many factors to take into consideration before choosing the right filters for their homes. While the EPA is sure to keep the public safe and exposed to clean H2O, the taste and consistency of home water can be improved even more with the help of water filters.
